Why SHTF Gear Is Absolutely Necessary

By Ruthie Livingston

When the shit really does hit the fan, you will know it. People who prepare for this eventuality say that this usually means a disaster such as a foreign invasion, a massive flood, power outage and, of course, zombies. Those people are called preppers and they have a lot of good ideas to consider. The first great idea is to plan for what you want to have as SHTF gear.

The first, rather obvious, thing you will need is a replacement for the home that you have had to leave. A suitable plan, before everything breaks down, will help you understand surviving in the wild. Preppers will often create a fortified compound out of the house they currently have so as to make it safe and secure as they go into the dangerous times.

Since this occurrence will be of such severity, it might last for weeks, months or as much as a year or more. This means you will need a shelter. Most people know about such things as a bug out bag. It has things that will allow them to survive this mess for a couple of days. The disaster that is being talked about, now, is a continuation of that, so the gear you need will represent a larger investment of thought, costs and resources.

Depending on the size of your group, the type and flexibility of your gear will vary. You do need to think about that shelter. You do need to ensure it is secured as much as possible against the weather and it might be best for it to be on high ground with enough cover to conceal if that is necessary.

The need for you to be self sufficient is very real. This means either having an electrical generator or doing without electricity like people used to do. Heat can come from a fireplace or a fire pit. The Internet, while the kind of disaster that is being discussed is happening, is going to be off line as well as most of the online games, anyway.

Public transportation probably is not available. True preppers have a large vehicle, already prepared and maintained so it will not break down easily. A repair manual, for the specific year, should be in the survival kit. Failing a motorized vehicle, because after a fairly short amount of time, there may not be gas, a large trailer or wagon, pulled by people or animals is the next best.

Security must not be left as an afterthought. Knives are appropriate and guns are often the first things preppers gather together. Ammunition should be stocked, now, before anything serious happens. Reloading gear is also something to think about. A pistol or rifle is absolutely no good for anything if there is no ammo.

The only reason you need this kind of gear is because this type of gear is the only thing that will see you through what is going to happen. The shtf stuff, and the ideas behind this gear, are what makes you able to endure and provide for your family when all else is falling apart. The absolute necessity of the right selection of materials is critical and planning this, before it becomes necessary, is more important.
