What To Expect From A Marine Transport Service

By Shirley Williams

Having a boat is one of those luxuries that can actually happen for many, depending on what size you want. While a multi-million dollar yacht is out of reach for most, having a much smaller vessel can be surprisingly affordable. However, unless you buy from someone at the same marina you plan to dock your boat at, then you will need the services of a marine transport company to help you get it there.

The size of your boat may matter for a few companies, who may not be able to handle really big vessels. However, for others, they may take anything from tiny jet skis, even if those are not actually boats, to luxury yachts of any length or width. It just requires trailers large enough to withstand the load.

The companies who can accommodate any size boat can likely accommodate any distance as well. Whether you need it shipped to another marina in the same state, country or even another continent, they can meet your needs. Most moves are just for repairs, such as engine work, but others are more elaborate and require days or even weeks to complete.

No matter the length of the move, there is plenty of big, specialized and expensive equipment involved. Not only must you acquire these equipment pieces, but you have to learn to use them as well if you want to do it yourself. That is why it is best to let the pros do it. They have the huge hydraulic trailers and more.

Even once your vessel is lifted onto the trailer, there is still plenty of work to be done. The weight must be evenly distributed in order to ensure that it stays stable on the trailer during transport. If not, it could cause seriously damage to the ship.

Every step of the way during a boat transport, there is potential for disaster. It rarely happens thankfully, especially if you are working with experienced people. That is why you should check out their reputation before you sign an agreement. Make sure they have a good reputation and liability insurance that covers both land and water. The minimum amount of insurance should be the value of your boat or a million dollars, whichever is the greater amount.

The total cost of this service depends on how big the boat is, and how far you need to move it. You can call local companies for an estimate and see how much, but they cannot quote without knowing the model, length and weight at the very least. Often they might also need to know what kind of engine it has as well.

When you are done researching and found a reputable company within your budget who can handle your needs, you can sign a contract. That contract should include a timeline and schedule for delivery or arrival of the boat so everyone knows what to expect.
