Start Your Peruvian Adventure With A Machu Picchu Tour Package

By Sandra Russell

For most a vacation getaway involves hanging out at the beach, visiting a theme park, or traveling to the home of relatives for a week or so in summer. There are a few truly adventurous people who climb mountains, dive in oceans, and are eager to explore exotic places. For these few, Peru might be a great place to go. Most have heard of Inca culture, but not many have had the chance to see it up close. If you are interested in this type of vacation, you might want to choose a Machu Picchu tour package to make the most of your time in South America.

The ancient city was reportedly built in the fifteenth century high up the mountains of Peru. The Incas may have constructed it as a religious retreat and estate for their emperor. Never completed, it was abandoned in the mid-fifteen hundreds when epidemics and war ravaged the male population. Over the centuries the jungle overtook the city until an American archaeologist discovered it during the early twentieth century.

Today Machu Picchu is a major tourist destination for everyone from casual sightseers to serious archeology buffs. There are many theories regarding its relevance to the Inca's culture. The Temple of the Sun, one of its most famous landmarks, may be a strong indication that the Incas were nature worshipers. This could be a good place to begin any tour of the area and the culture.

Many nature enthusiasts will marvel at how these native people used terracing to produce crops. The top soil had to be conveyed from the valley below in order for the plan to work successfully. Of course everything was done with human labor and no technology.

In order to survive and thrive, crops need water so the Incas developed an irrigating system to effectively and efficiently provide the necessary water to grow food and also to provide water for the inhabitants. All of this was done without modern tools and equipment.

Some of the most popular tours include hiking packages. These tours may last as little as two days or extend over a week long period. For those who are able, this may the best of all possible ways to really get an appreciation for the diversity of Inca culture and the region where it existed. Some choose to travel independently or in small private groups. If you are not a seasoned veteran of this area, you should probably take advantage of some local guides.

If an extended hiking tour seems a little more strenuous than you were planning, you can still enjoy the area and your vacation time. You can browse the marketplaces and choose from many of the fine restaurants and shops found here. You can decide which areas of the ruins most interest you and where you want to spend your time.

A vacation trip to Machu Picchu can be a magical adventure that you will not soon forget. The Lost City of the Incas is truly one of this world's new seven wonders.
