Why Gator Hunting In Louisiana Is Popular

By Stella Gay

Ever since time immemorial man has engaged in harvesting for quite a number of reasons. They used them as food, to make clothing or for purposes of pride. The practice has remained with us even up to date because man still stalks the animals for the same reasons. A case scenario that has become quite popular is gator hunting in Louisiana.

The animal is hunted for one reason; their skin or hide. This part of their body is very valuable in the leather industry because the quality is farfetched. One who has bought leather items from the alligator skin can tell the difference once they make a purchase on another.

In Louisiana, the local government authority has made it legal for individuals who are interested in the practice. It is only individuals who own wetland areas in order to qualify for the harvest tags. This kind of environment is perceived to be conducive enough to sustain the livelihood of the animal. The person should be able to prove that the land in question belongs to them genuinely before they can obtain the permit.

Indigenous people have an upper hand when it comes to enjoying a few privileges. One of them is the fact that they can obtain the permits at a reduced cost as compared to the ones who do not come from the region. In most cases, should one opt for hunting as a means of recreation, they may need to use the help of the guide who has a responsibility in ensuring that all goes well while in the area.

This activity would not be complete if not for introduction of certain equipment. They are namely; hook and line, firearms and bows and arrows. Nevertheless, the issue of firearms must be revised because shot guns are examples of firearms but are not allowed. The relevant department has banned this due to their destructive nature.

It is important to take into account the manner in which one is to keep the hide safely and in good condition. This is why they are advised to store them in cool and dry areas away from pollutants such as the gasoline and oil. These contaminants can destroy the hide within a very short time and result in loss of value.

The wildlife and fisheries department has a calendar through which they use to inform the potential hunters on which season they can make use of best. This is why they designated the fist Wednesday on the month of September as the best time for harvesting. First of all, they need to acquire CITES tags which acts as proof of licensing. Without this, anyone who is found to be harvesting without the tag may face prosecution.

In essence, the harvesting is a great experience for those who come from the area or from other areas. This is why there is a clear guideline in which one can obtain the license and what one needs to engage in the activity.
