What To Look For When Buying Your First Paddle Board Maui

By Virginia Stevens

If you love the idea of getting out on the water as a fun and exciting form of exercise, you may be thinking about getting a paddle board. But which one? There are many different types and options on the market. Here are some things to consider that will help you pick the right paddle board Maui for your needs.

Being on a board is extremely relaxing and can take away much of the stress that daily life brings. Imagine feeling the waves rocking beneath your feet while you paddle your SUP through the waves. If you have ever paddled a canoe, chances are most of the basic skills will be familiar to you.

Some people love the idea of racing on their boards. Others love the idea of traveling over long distances as they move from one beach to another. You need to think about how you will use your board. While a racing version can be used to tour on it is generally better to pick a model that is designed for the use you have in mind.

If you love yoga, you may want to try it while afloat. SUP yoga is becoming very popular for a reason. People love the extra dimension it gives their practice. You may want to start by taking a class for beginners while you learn how to deal with the water and how to modify poses properly. Look for a board that is wide enough and long enough to handle various poses and which is stable enough to keep from tipping over all of the time.

You may want to think about how you will store your gear and how you will get it to the water. A SUP can be quite large and heavy. If you lack space or find it hard to carry heavy weights you might want to think about an inflatable model. This can be carried to where you will set off from and inflated, then deflated and taken home to be stored until next time.

While the bulk of your budget will go to pay for the SUP itself, there are other things you will need too. For example, you need a paddle in order to move your SUP through the water. Try out different models to see what you like best. Also look at buying a tether to keep your board attached to your ankle and a life jacket to keep you safe if you do fall off.

One thing that can be helpful especially for a beginner is paddling lessons. You will learn basic strokes, how to get back up if you fall off, and other essential skills that will help you when you are out on your own.

Of course, if you find that the variety of options is too big for you to make a decision, there is an alternative to buying. Renting a SUP can allow you to try different models and will let you figure out which kind of SUP will meet your needs. It can also be a good idea to rent as part of a tour if you will be traveling to Maui as shipping a board can be very expensive.
